Optics.
Global Optics.
A public data terminal for release timing, source coverage, source-native observations and supporting CSI tables.
Optics separates the data surface from the CSI surface. CSI can focus on the consolidated index, its composition and proof trail; Global Optics focuses on what data exists, when source releases are scheduled or expected, which countries and species are covered, and which values remain illustrative or provisional.
Optics
Optics is the evidence and source layer behind CSI. It tracks source cadence, the publication calendar, freshness, transformation notes, and which CSI products each source feeds. Every value is illustrative and provisional until a reproducible production pipeline certifies a release.

Indexed values over time
The headline CSI is a single composite line; here are all eight sub-indexes it composes, each an indexed value (baseline 100) on one shared scale. Unlike the composite, this casts every benchmark so you can watch each one move per observed data point.
Eight metrics — real-world trajectories, 2000–2026 (provisional)
How to read this: each line is the real-world trajectory of the metric, indexed to its year-2000 baseline of 100, so a rising line means that activity is genuinely increasing — the Animal Headcount line rises because head-counts are rising. The legend and readout show each metric's aggregated world total in physical units (head, tonnes, hectares, people); the lines stay indexed so all eight share one scale. For seven of the eight (head-counts, emissions, land use, trade, feed, output and farm jobs) a rising line means more animal-agriculture pressure, which pushes the headline CSI down — the CSI consumes the inverse of these. Only the plant-based transition (consumer) rising is good for the CSI. Use the View buttons to switch between the real-world activity and the CSI sub-index the index consumes; the readout shows both numbers for the selected point.

All eight metrics on one shared index scale (2000 = 100), reflected into real-world orientation from the published sub-index histories so a rising line always means the activity is rising. Each line ends at its last published value — a true ragged edge. Headcount (to 2026), GHG (to 2026), Land use (to 2026), Trade (to 2026), Feed (to 2026), Output (to 2026), Employment (to 2026), Consumer (to 2026) now extend past 2023 on real current sources (national statistics, national production and Climate TRACE); the remaining metrics end at 2023, FAOSTAT's latest, held flat for the composite but not drawn as observations here. The shared scale spans every metric (roughly 59 to 173), so a recent move of a few index points is a small but real slope, not a flat line. The CSI consumes the inverse of the seven animal-agriculture metrics, so the headline CSI falls as they climb. Select a metric above to trace it; hover or keyboard-focus a point to inspect it. Illustrative/provisional until a reproducible production pipeline certifies a release.

What these labels mean
Release status
- Scheduled
- A future release with an exact date pinned from the agency's official calendar.
- Expected
- A future release projected from the source's recurrence rule; the exact day is not yet published.
- Landed
- A past release whose reference period has arrived in the head-count data.
- Overdue
- A past release whose date has passed but whose data has not advanced yet.
- Review window
- An internal CSI reconciliation window, not a source publication.
Date provenance
- Official date
- Exact day taken from the agency's published release calendar (e.g. the USDA NASS iCalendar feed).
- Estimate
- Day projected from the source's known release rhythm because no exact date is published yet.
- Internal
- An Unpenned Token review window, not an external agency release.

G20 animal head counts — live national sources Provisional
A live ragged-edge nowcast: each country/species/source series shows its latest published value at its own cadence (no waiting for alignment, no frequency gating). Sourced from official national statistics where machine-readable, with FAOSTAT QCL Stocks as a clearly-labelled gap-fill for the few nations whose national source is not yet scriptable. Illustrative/provisional until a reproducible production pipeline certifies a release; redistribution rights are dataset-level and pending a named human review.
19 G20 nations (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Türkiye, United Kingdom, United States) · 86 live series · each shown at its own latest reference period, from 2024 to 2026. Cadence is per series, never a gate; semi-annual, quarterly, and annual sources can sit beside each other.

Published/as-of 8 June 2026. Runtime-keyed USDA NASS rows are collected during the scheduled refresh; no-key national sources continue to refresh if that source is unavailable. Values are illustrative/provisional until a reproducible production pipeline certifies a release, and redistribution rights are dataset-level and pending a named human review.
The consolidated index reading, the weighted composition and reproducibility proofs live on the CSI surfaces. Return to CSI.
Calendar statuses define the publication state.
- Scheduled
- The source has published a date for the release.
- Expected
- The source cadence is known but the exact day is not; the page says expected around the month or window.
- Ingesting
- Source data is being collected and formatted.
- Under review
- Automated or manual validation is active.
- Verified
- The update has passed checks and can be reflected in CSI reporting.
- Delayed
- Source data has not arrived or needs clarification.
- Revised
- A previously published update has changed after reconciliation.
